But what are the benefits of practice?
Consistent daily practice creates new neural pathways in the brain. Many parents who have tired of arguing with their child to practice have called asking for lessons again. Their reason? “Little Johnny did better at school while he was taking lessons.”
With extensive research done by leading Universities, piano lessons are now being prescribed by doctors for many neurological conditions such as dementia, M.S., brain injury etc. Why?
How can piano lessons help with physical and neurological
Should a parent insist on daily practice yes! Learning to read music, learning technique, using the brain is hard work. This is the reason students resist. But this is also what makes it good for building the neural pathways in the brain.
When working with small children, they often say “I’m tired now.” Yes! It’s that brain work. Don’t negotiate with them, on quitting. Piano is not only education and mental stimulation but it’s also loaded with preparation for life.

Besides the benefits to the brain 🧠 and or neurological conditions or injuries. Piano lessons and practice also build responsibility, patience, determination, and many other life necessities needed to be successful in the real world.
Students learn the importance of working hard on independent study, independent practice and learning that a year is common to study one piece that is a little above their level. They learn that the rewards of this are not trophies handed out as participation awards, but that the real awards in the world are those you have devoted your time, energy and emotions to a goal. Students learn that being successful with reaching their goal and having a performance they are proud of builds confidence, honesty, and lays the foundation for confidence in public speaking.
If I had $5 for everytime someone asked me if I had heard of the ten thousand hour rule, I’d probably have $10,000. Not only have I heard of it, but I have completed it to the extent of 40,000. I am convinced practice and piano events have defined life abilities to create success in the work world and daily life as an adult in general.
